Houston, Texas shooting: Teen accused of Damon Price murder turned in by mother, sources say

HOUSTON– Sources say a 14-year-old accused of fatally shooting a Houston Farmers Market employee who tried to thwart his alleged attempt to steal a golf cart was actually turned in by his own mother.

The shooting happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

Surveillance footage captured two hooded suspects walking toward the building where the victim, identified as Damon Price, 36, was on duty.

The Houston Police Department said Price's job was to check on delivery trucks arriving at the building.

Police say Price confronted the suspects after seeing them try to steal a golf cart before a fight ensued. That's when a suspect pulled out a gun and shot Price, hitting him multiple times.

Officials said Price was already on the ground before he was shot in the parking lot.

Both suspects fled the scene. Authorities said there were four shell casings at the scene.

On Friday, one of the suspects was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. He is currently being held at the Harris County Detention Center in Texas.

In an update released Saturday, ABC Houston affiliate KTRK sources said the suspect was taken by his mother to the downtown police station to turn himself in.

There is no official update on the second suspect who was seen in several photos released by HPD.

Price's family told KTRK they were saddened to learn of the suspect's tender age, but that he must live with the consequences.

“It happened while he was doing his job,” said Price's father, Leo Price Sr.. “Really, there's nothing to say about a man going to work.”

Authorities said the 14-year-old was scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.
