Houston Farmers Market shooting: Employee killed while trying to stop two teenage suspects from stealing golf cart, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Police are searching for two teenage suspects accused of shooting and killing a worker at the Houston Farmers' Market in the Greater Heights area early Thursday morning.

The deadly shooting happened just before 4:20 a.m. on Airline Drive, just south of I-610 North Loop.

Houston police said the victim's job was to check in delivery trucks. He was apparently with a security guard in the guard shack when they spotted two young suspects trying to steal a golf cart.

The victim, described as a man in his 40s, came out and confronted the suspects, at which point he was shot multiple times, according to HPD.

The suspects reportedly fled after the shooting, leaving the employee for dead in the parking lot. Investigators said at least four shell casings were found at the scene.

“The building is open, I guess, early in the morning for deliveries. They had a door that was open. Somehow they knew it would be open and they were able to get in,” said Det. D. Crowder said. “We don't know if they took anything, but they had backpacks on them. We can assume they were there to steal something.”

Investigators said they don't think the suspects could have gotten far. They noticed that one of them was wearing flip-flops.

The incident was captured on surveillance video. HPD released photos of the juvenile suspects, in hopes that someone might recognize them.
