Housing sought for residents displaced after Second Avenue Commons fire – WPXI

City officials continue to seek housing for residents of Second Avenue Commons after last week's fire.

“The Second Avenue Commons fire has created an unprecedented crisis,” Erin Dalton, director of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, said in a news release.

Nearly 200 people were displaced by the fire, caused by a rooftop air conditioning unit.

Shelters, including Light of Life and Community Human Services, have made 34 beds available for residents.

DHS is working to find housing for approximately 130 residents who are staying at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

“With a heat wave approaching in the coming days, finding safe shelter is an urgent priority,” Dalton said.

This weekend, residents will be moved from the convention center to the Family Links facility in Allentown.

A former Vincentian property in Stanton Heights has been approved to become a bridge housing property. DHS is working with Community Health Services to free up space for 52 of the displaced residents.

Officials estimate it will be several months before the entire building is open for occupancy.
