Hot Saturday with isolated gusty showers in the afternoon, heat still close to the record for Father's Day

Today's forecast:
Generally good weather sets in Saturday with the return of the heat engine across the Centennial State. Generally clear skies start the day with a few lingering clouds over the eastern plains. Moisture and energy from the upper levels are coming in from the west, but the air near the ground today will be quite dry – and the energy is fairly spread out. Combined, you should expect a few isolated mountain showers and weak T-storms this afternoon over the central mountains to the Front Range, with these storms then moving as usual across I-25 and into the 'is towards the plains. Along the corridor, these isolated showers will mainly produce gusty breezes. If you see one, it will be short-lived – it's a pleasant day, but warm to hot with highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s.

Sunrise today is at 5:33 a.m. and sunset is at 8:26 p.m. Fun fact: We are now past our first sunrise of the year, which was June 13th. From now on, sunsets will be later until early January next year. Our longest day, the summer solstice, is Thursday, June 20.

Extended Outlook Forecast:

A warm Father's Day is in store for southern Colorado as high pressure heads north. Mostly sunny skies with triple-digit heat across the Arkansas River Valley and eastern Plains, with mid-90s in the Pikes Peak region and low 80s in the foothills. It will be a slightly windy afternoon with dry winds descending from the southwest due to a low pressure system to the west. We may see some clouds in the afternoon, but it's generally a dry day. Records will be threatened again, primarily in the Arkansas River Valley. Monday remains quite warm with increasing downburst breezes and still dry conditions.

A cold front will arrive Tuesday morning, bringing some relief from the heat and bringing more moisture. I expect this to result in a low chance of showers or storms during the afternoon, favoring the mountains with a lower chance over the plains and areas north of Highway 50. Maximum temperatures are expected to be about 10 degrees cooler than Monday.

Wednesday and Thursday bring better humidity from the Gulf of Mexico, making us more unsettled with a chance of afternoon showers and storms in southern Colorado. ____
