Hopkinsville police arrested a Lewisburg couple on drug charges after a search of their vehicle Tuesday allegedly revealed the presence of suspected methamphetamine.

According to a report, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on West 7.th Street to have objects obstructing the windshield. Officers made contact with Eric Covington, 45, who was driving the vehicle, and Tonya Covington, 46, who was in the passenger seat.

While speaking with Eric Covington, officers reported that he was very nervous, his hands were shaking and he was breathing heavily. Due to his behavior, the officer called a K9 unit to the scene.

Once the K9 arrived, both men were ordered out of the vehicle and a search allegedly revealed suspected methamphetamine, unknown orange pills, suspected marijuana and a scale. Officers allegedly saw Tonya Covington attempting to hide something in her pants and a search of her person allegedly revealed a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

Both men were charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, first-degree possession of an unspecified controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Tonya Covington was also charged with tampering with physical evidence.
