A teenage cyclist is fighting for his life in a Hong Kong public hospital after a collision with a taxi left him unconscious on Wednesday morning.

Police arrested a 69-year-old taxi driver on suspicion of dangerous driving in connection with the accident, which happened around 1.18am on the Kwai Tsing Road section of a bridge in Tsing Yi.

The 17-year-old cyclist was riding in front of the taxi heading towards Tsing Yi when the collision happened, police said.

“The taxi is suspected of hitting the bike,” a police spokesman said.

Police said the cyclist suffered head injuries and lost consciousness while being taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Lai Chi Kok for treatment.

A government spokeswoman said the teenager was in critical condition as of 1 p.m.

The taxi driver was also taken to the same hospital for treatment after complaining of neck pain.
