Homicide victim identified in Etobicoke shooting

Toronto police said a 61-year-old man from Woodstock, Ont. was killed in a shooting that left four others injured as the group gathered after a football game outside an Etobicoke high school this weekend.

Authorities said Delroy “George” Parkes was among those shot in the area of Mount Olive Drive and Kipling Avenue, near North Albion Collegiate Institute, around 11 p.m. Sunday.

It appears that a dark van stopped in the high school parking lot. Two suspects got out and allegedly opened fire before fleeing in the vehicle.

Police and medics arrived on scene and located five injured people, all men aged between 40 and 60 years old. The victims were transported to a local hospital, where one of the men, identified Tuesday as Parkes, was pronounced dead.

The other four victims suffered life-threatening or non-life-threatening injuries.

No motive has been determined. On Monday, Detective Sergeant Phillip Campbell was unable to say whether the deceased man was specifically targeted.

“From what I understand, it’s just a group of men getting together after playing football in the afternoon,” he said. “Just socializing, enjoying the fresh air. We think there were maybe 15 to 20 people (on scene at the time).

North Albion Collegiate Institute and on-site daycare were closed Monday but reopened Tuesday.

Police could not confirm whether the fatal shooting was linked to two other shootings in Etobicoke over the weekend that investigators say were random.
