Homicide, officer-involved shooting at Dover senior living facility under investigation

DOVER, Del. – An investigation is underway following a homicide and police-involved shooting that left two people dead in Dover Tuesday evening.

Just before 5:30 p.m., officers were called to Harmony at the Kent Senior Living Center for a report of a trespassing incident that escalated into a shooting. Police said the suspect, a 51-year-old Camden man, was on the property to visit a relative after being banned from the establishment for aggressive behavior. The suspect, accompanied by his relative, was allegedly escorted out of the building by a 59-year-old employee, whom he allegedly hit as he left the building. The suspect then ran to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun, firing one shot at a relative's vehicle as he drove through the facility's parking lot before shooting the 59-year-old staff member .

The suspect then reportedly remained near his vehicle while troopers and officers from Probation and Parole, the Wyoming Police Department and the Dover Police Department arrived on scene. The officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but he allegedly walked away from his vehicle and raised his handgun, prompting two officers to shoot him with their division-issued firearms.

Officers provided first aid to the suspect and staff member until they were taken to a nearby hospital by emergency medical services, where they were both pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

In accordance with Delaware State Police standard operating procedures, the troopers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending a use of force investigation.
