Home near submerged Minnesota dam washed into river

Mankato, MN (KROC-AM News) – A home along a dam in Minnesota, submerged by rushing and flooding waters, fell into the river.

A weekend of excessive rain in southern Minnesota has led to increased water levels in the Blue Earth River.

The swollen river began putting pressure on Rapidan Dam, located about 10 miles southwest of Mankato, on Sunday.

Authorities said Monday that the dam was in imminent danger of failure. The river had breached the west side of the structure and was bypassing the dam.

Diverted water began to erode the bank on the west side of the Blue Earth River. On Tuesday, part of a house built on the west bank of the river collapsed and was swept away by the river.

Authorities are now monitoring the impacts downstream. No injuries have been reported.

Blue Earth County emergency officials held a news conference Tuesday and said water levels in the Blue Earth River peaked Monday.

The city of Mankato announced Tuesday that the river is expected to crest at 29.5 feet, 10 feet below the capacity of the city's levee system. No mass evacuation orders have been issued.

An assessment of the partially destroyed dam is still underway.
