Holly Hill police shoot man 'experiencing a violent episode'

A man is dead after police say he threatened to harm himself and others with a steak knife Tuesday afternoon. A Holly Hill police officer fatally shot the suspect, who was “experiencing a violent episode,” just before 5:30 p.m., according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office. It happened near Ridgewood Avenue and 5th Street, said VSO, which is assisting in the investigation. A 911 caller said the man had threatened to kill her in the past and was going to stab a woman outside. When officers arrived, VSO said the man broke away from the woman and began running toward the officer who then fired several shots. VSO said the suspect fell but got up. More shots were fired, VSO said, and the man eventually died. The man's mother told police that her son was schizophrenic, dangerous and had previously attacked her and law enforcement. Ridgewood Avenue was closed between 3rd and 5th streets.
