Himanta Biswa Sarma leads 'war' on drugs in Assam: 'The threat must end'

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a relentless campaign against drug trafficking, promising to eradicate the menace looming over the youth of the state. In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Sarma highlighted the government's commitment to eliminating contraband substances that are wreaking havoc on society.

Sarma's statement follows significant progress made in the state's ongoing 'War on Drugs' initiative. Since taking office on May 10, 2021 until May 15, 2024, authorities have recorded 8,855 cases related to drug offenses. During this period, a staggering 14,593 people were arrested for their involvement in drug-related activities.

The seizure of contraband substances was significant, with a total of 432 kg of heroin, 105,567 kg of cannabis, 453 kg of opium and 1,100,858 bottles of codeine cough syrup confiscated by security forces. 'order. In addition, a significant number of tablets and capsules, totaling 123,512,298, were seized.

Other illicit substances seized include 3,318 kg of poppy straw, 5,518,417.5 kg of cash, 28,865 units of foreign currency, 206,400 fake Indian currency notes, 2 kg of morphine, 24 kg of crystal methamphetamine and 1 kg of cocaine.

The estimated market value of the confiscated substances stands at a staggering ₹2,166.30 crore, highlighting the scale of drug trafficking in the region.

Sarma’s announcement is a testament to the state government’s unwavering resolve to combat drug trafficking and protect its citizens, especially the youth, from the devastating consequences of drug addiction. The aggressive steps taken so far demonstrate a commitment to eradicating the scourge of drugs and safeguarding the welfare of the people of Assam.
