Hillsborough sheriff's deputy recovering after being shot during standoff

TAMPA, Fl. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Shane McGough is recovering well at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa on Monday, according to Sheriff Chad Chronister's latest update after the deputy was shot Saturday night during a standoff and barricade situation in Citrus Park .

Chronister said McGough had a metal rod put in his tibia and the bullet removed from his leg. Surgeons said the surgery went well, and there will be about a three-month recovery period from the injury.

Body-worn camera footage from the scene Saturday night revealed 26-year-old McGough and multiple other deputies' interactions with 19-year-old Christos Alexander, who officials said shot and killed his mother and father before shooting McGough. Five deputies fired back at Alexander, who crawled inside his home and was later found dead there.

“I see all the deputies running with shields on, towards his house and I knew immediately,” said Seanna Galarza. “Then, about minutes [later], I don't know, it happened so fast — war zone. Just gunshots going back and forth, back and forth.”

Neighbor Seanna Galarza said law enforcement had been to the home before.

“One day, [Alexander] walked up with us. We were walking my son, and [he] just started walking along with us, and then it became a routine every time he saw us walking our son,” Galarza said. “He was just always talking about weapons.”

Chronister confirmed Alexander had a risk protection order against him.

“We need to find out what happened,” Chronister said. “How did this mentally ill subject have access to any type of firearms, when we took his firearms? They're in our custody.”

Chronister said Alexander lived at home with his parents, and deputies were called to that home at least ten times since 2021, mostly for mental health services and violence against his parents.
