Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office may change location

County commissioners will consider the proposal later this month.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office could get a new home if county commissioners approve it.

The board will consider a land swap later this month that would move the sheriff's office from its Ybor City location to Grow Financial's current headquarters. The site is almost three times larger and was built in 2005, which would provide law enforcement with a modernized workspace, according to a press release.

The building is located at 9927 Delaney Lake Drive near Brandon, and Ybor developer Darryl Shaw has signed an acquisition agreement.

“Whenever there is an opportunity to collaborate for the benefit of the taxpayers, the Sheriff’s Office and Ybor City, we will always be interested in those opportunities,” Shaw said in the release. “We are fortunate to have forward-thinking public partners who are open to exploring possibilities that could result in long-term benefits for the community. »

The current sheriff's office covers approximately 8.33 acres of land and has buildings that are more than a century old. If the swap is approved, the agency will get 24 acres of land and a 5-story building. The property also has covered parking on 3 floors.

“I support the County's incredible collaboration with Mr. Shaw to initiate this land exchange, which will increase the efficiency of the services we provide to the community, support future growth and reduce costs to taxpayers,” said the Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister in the release. .

Grow Financial will move to a new office building that is part of the Gas Worx development in Ybor City, which was also a Shaw business. It was approved in August 2022 and will include residences, businesses and offices.

A county commissioner who will vote on the proposal June 20 was supportive.

“We have an opportunity here to seek an innovative solution to our Hillsborough Sherriff's aging facility and provide his team with a home that will serve future generations,” Commissioner Michael Owen said in the release.

Grow Financial's current location is about a 15-minute drive from the current sheriff's office and just across I-75 from the Brandon Mall.
