Highland Park Fourth of July Parade Returns, Ceremony Honors Victims – NBC Chicago

Highland Park marked the return of its July 4 parade Thursday, two years after a gunman opened fire on the summer tradition, killing seven people.

As floats, marching bands and gymnasts took part in the parade, a ceremony was held to remember the seven people who lost their lives and the others who were forever changed.

“We must remember what this community has been through and the lives we have lost,” Mayor Nancy Rotering said. “We have learned to come together, refusing to let tragedy define us.”

The names of the victims were read out during the commemoration ceremony, where a minute of silence was also observed for each of them.

“This minute is particularly significant because it is silent. We can honor the lives taken too soon and all those affected,” Rotering said.

Although this year's parade route was different, the theme remained the same: connection, community and love.

The day was not about mourning but about recognizing the strength and resilience of the city as it moves forward.

“We must not let anyone scare us and we must support each other,” said Simon Blanks.

Latonya Collins, who came from suburban Park Forest with her grandchildren, said it was important for them to attend the parade.

“To show our support for the community,” LaTonya Collins said. “It’s so sad what they’ve been through.”

Highland Park has received a $1 million gift from Jon and Mindy Gray to support the construction of a permanent place of reflection and remembrance.

Mayor Rotering said today's events were appropriate for this year, although the city has not yet decided what will happen next year.
