Last year, Pennsylvania's 10 highest-paid school superintendents all worked in southeastern Pennsylvania school districts, with salaries between $275,980 and $340,000, according to recent salary data from the Department of Pennsylvania Education.

The Department of Education recently released its annual report on individual salaries, collected in early October for 192,450 staff members at public schools, charter schools, career and technical centers, and juvenile detention centers.

The collective salaries of about 500 public school superintendents across the state totaled nearly $83 million. Half of them earned between $40,000 and $156,807 during the 2023-2024 school year, according to the data.

Each of the state's 10 highest-paid full-time public school superintendents leads districts in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.

Philadelphia City School District Superintendent Tony Washington tops the salary list for Pennsylvania's largest school district, with nearly 118,000 students enrolled and an annual salary of $340,000.

Washington, the only black school administrator in the top 10, is followed by Chester County's Unionville-Chadds Ford School District superintendent John C. Sanville, who received $322,967 in a district of about 3,751 students in October.

For example, the third highest paid superintendent in the state, and the highest paid in Bucks County, last October was Abram Lucabaugh, who left his post in the Central Bucks school district and collected a controversial separation agreement of $700,000 two weeks before a new majority on the board of directors. was due to take office in early December.
