High Point detectives arrest man on drug charges

HIGH POINT — For the second time in a month, High Point police detectives have arrested a man for drug trafficking and possession.

James A. Jones III, 32, was out of jail on bond at the time of his May 29 arrest and had pending cases in several counties on charges including attempted murder, drug offenses and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a senior news release from the Point Police Department.

Detectives spotted Jones around 9 a.m. on May 29 and realized he was a suspect in a recent narcotics deal. A short time later, detectives saw Jones' vehicle parked at the Guilford County Courthouse on East Green Drive in High Point, the release states.

A detective allegedly smelled marijuana smoke coming from Jones' car and could see drug paraphernalia in the car.

Detectives then searched Jones' vehicle and reported finding crack cocaine (7.28 grams); heroin (10.58 grams); marijuana (52.5 grams); methamphetamine (5.61 grams); $88 cash; and drug paraphernalia, the release states.

Police called Jones out of the Guilford County courthouse and charged him with trafficking heroin; possession of a Schedule II controlled substance; maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance; possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance; possession of a controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked.

A judge set Jones' bail at $3.2 million. He was out of jail on $1.6 million bail, according to the release.

On May 8, High Point police arrested Jones on charges of dealing methamphetamine; possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, the release said. The next court date for Jones was not immediately available.
