HFD recovers body during search for missing hiker in Makapuu

Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. Honolulu firefighters resumed their search at 5 a.m. today for a teenager reported missing Sunday evening on the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail.

UPDATE: 4 p.m.

Honolulu firefighters said they found a body on the Makapuu Cliffs around 8:17 a.m. today after a 17-year-old boy was reported missing Sunday evening from the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail.

Firefighters were rappelling down the beach side cliffs when they located the body using more than 300 feet of rope.

HFD's Air 1 helicopter transported the body to a nearby landing zone at 9:05 a.m., where custody was turned over to the Honolulu Police Department.

No injuries were reported among HFD personnel.

EARLIER TODAY

Honolulu firefighters resumed their search at 5 a.m. today for a teenager reported missing Sunday evening on the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail.

HFD received a 911 call at 8:03 p.m. Sunday reporting a 17-year-old hiker missing.

The teen's last known location was on the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail, a mile-long paved road leading to an overlook above the historic Makapuu Lighthouse.

Six units with 17 people responded.

The first arrived on site around 8:20 p.m. and established command. Firefighters conducted ground and air searches, which were suspended at 11:10 p.m. Sunday evening.

Gates to the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail entrance open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:45 p.m. during the summer months.
