VIRGINIA – After a weekend with high temperatures hovering around 80 degrees thanks to the passage of a cold front, prepare for rising temperatures later this week across D.C. and Northern Virginia.

The region's second heat wave before summer officially begins on June 20 will see temperatures reach the 90s starting Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Friday's high will flirt with 100 degrees.

“Behind an earlier cold front, today's high temperatures are largely in the mid-70s to low-80s. This is accompanied by a few isolated showers and storms as a disturbance in the upper atmosphere is spreading. Expect a return of summer weather late this week,” the weather service said in a tweet Monday morning.

Parts of the Northeast could experience their first heat wave of the summer during the week of June 17,” said AccuWeather long-range meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.

The heat could settle first in the northern part of the northeast before extending south. The National Weather Service defines a heat wave as abnormally hot weather, with or without high humidity, usually lasting more than two days, AccuWeather said. In the Northeast, the 90 degree mark is the unofficial threshold for warm weather in most places.
