Synopsis

High pressure to the north and northeast of the state will maintain moderate to locally windy easterly trade winds through the week. Showers will mainly favor windward and mauka areas, with occasional areas of high clouds.

Discussion

Broad high pressure in the far north of the islands continues to generate moderate to locally windy trade winds across the state. Infrared satellite imagery shows an area of showers and thunderstorms about 600 miles west of Kauai, associated with a nearly stationary surface trough and accompanying low aloft. This characteristic also leads to a slightly more east-southeast orientation of local trade than usual, particularly on the western islands. Morning soundings from Lihue and Hilo show generally stable conditions with temperature inversions between 6,000 and 7,000 feet. The latest radar images show scattered, mostly light showers moving into windward areas as well as some leeward island plumes of Oahu and Kauai. Rainfall totals have been light, with only a few areas receiving up to a quarter of an inch over the past 6 hours. A small area of increased humidity also moves toward the windward Big Island this morning, which will increase showers a bit early in the afternoon.
Little change is expected in the overall pattern through Tuesday, as high pressure gradually strengthens toward the north/northwest and the surface trough and upper low west of the state remain nearly stationary . Shallow moisture embedded in the trade winds will sometimes produce windward and mauka showers, particularly overnight into the early morning hours each day. Additionally, expect spotty afternoon and evening showers, some briefly heavy, on leeward portions of the Big Island. The trough's proximity to the western end of the state will weaken the inversion near Kauai at times and could increase shower activity there, like last night. However, forecasts agree that the trough will remain far enough west of the main Hawaiian Islands to otherwise have little impact on local weather.
For the remainder of the week, the surface high will settle into the far northeast of the state and persist through Friday, while the surface trough will persist west of the islands and produce trade winds windy from the east. The nearby upper level trough will weaken toward midweek, leading to greater stability and favoring a more typical pattern of commercial showers favoring windward and mauka areas.

Aviation

A fairly stable trend will persist in the state over the next few days. Moisture integrated into the commercial flow will enable SHRA on upwind and mauka areas. VFR conditions are expected to prevail in most locations, with MVFR conditions possible in any SHRA.
AIRMET Sierra is in effect for mtn obsc for the upwind sections of the Big Island and north to southeast of the Small Islands.
AIRMET Tango remains in effect for moderate low-level turbulence downwind of island terrain. This AIRMET will likely remain in effect for much of this week.
With a weak shortwave trough passing just west of the state on Monday and increasing mid-level clouds around Kauai, it is possible that AIRMET Zulu will be needed for light icing between 160 and FL250 of Monday afternoon until Monday evening.

Marine

Moderate to strong easterly trading will continue through the week as the surface ridge remains positioned north of the state. The strongest winds are expected over the windiest waters around Maui County and the Big Island, supporting the small craft advisory. The lightest winds are expected over Kauai waters, fluctuating between east and east-southeast over the next few days due to a persistent surface trough to the west. A shift out of the east-northeast is likely later in the week as the trough weakens and moves away from the region.
Surf along exposed south-facing coastlines will remain light for much of the week, driven by a combination of south-southwest and southeast bottom swell energy. An increasing trend is expected from Friday into the first week of June due to an active trend establishing within our swell window near New Zealand.
Altimeter and ASCAT runs over the past two days reflected the potential for next weekend, showing a broad swath of gale to storm force winds with seas up to 30 feet concentrated over the state in directional bands from 190 to 200 degrees. This will mark the start of a long-lasting event with additional reinforcements expected in the same area over the coming days.
Surf along exposed east-facing coasts will remain light and choppy throughout the week as trade winds persist.
Surf along north-facing coasts will remain near summer average each day, with only small northwesterly bottom pulses expected today and potentially next weekend.
