Synopsis

Moderate to windy trade winds will continue to strengthen through the middle of next week as high pressure slowly rebounds to our north. The rare commercial showers will favor the banks and windward slopes.

Discussion

Moderate trade winds persisted overnight, with locally windy conditions noted in the eastern channels, despite a weakened ridge to the north. The latest soundings showed a dry and stable air mass, thanks to strong ridges aloft, with less than an inch of PW and positive lifting index values. Steep inversions near 4,000 feet helped limit cloud development and precipitation, particularly away from upwind areas. Radar shows almost no shower activity within range.
Models show the ridge to the north will rebound over the forecast period as a troublesome mid-latitude trough lifts further north. Trade will continue to strengthen in local waters as the upper ridge moves north and east of the islands until early next week. Expect a trade wind weather pattern throughout the forecast period, with clouds and showers favoring windward areas. Rainfall totals will be low.

Aviation

Windy conditions will continue to gradually increase throughout the remainder of the day. With high pressure and dry air in place over the region, SHRA activity will be limited. A strong reversal will keep cigarettes low allowing for periods of MVFR conditions. Otherwise, VFR conditions should prevail.
No AIRMET currently in force.

Marine

Moderate to locally strong easterly trade winds will increase into a mild to strong range today and continue through much of the week as the surface ridge strengthens northward. This could lead to the extension of the small craft advisory to the windward waters of the Kaiwi Channel and Maui County by Monday. Indications suggest a potential weakness would form in the ridge northwest of the state next weekend, which could lead to moderate to cool east-southeast trading.
Surf along south facing coastlines will remain high throughout the week due to an active trend in our swell window near New Zealand. Overlapping swells over a long period, from south to south-southwest, are expected, with the next one starting to fill early this morning (maximum energy centered in the 18-22 second bands at buoys). Indications are that this swell peaks late at night through Monday. A decreasing trend is expected from Tuesday until mid-week, with mainly a mix of fading south-southwest swell and a small medium-period south-easterly swell. A new long-lasting south swell is expected to arrive overnight from Thursday to Friday, then peak late Friday and Saturday.
Surf along north-facing coastlines will remain slightly up through the first half of the week as small north to north-northwest pulses move through. The next northerly pulse is expected to occur Monday evening, with a small north-northwest swell arriving midweek Tuesday. A return to summer/flat conditions is likely later this week and into next weekend.
Surfing along east-facing coasts is expected to trend toward increasing later this week as currents establish locally and upstream in the eastern Pacific.
