Synopsis

Light to gentle easterly trade winds are expected today, with a ridge to the north of the state. As the ridge lifts northward tonight and Sunday, a moderate to locally windy easterly trade wind will develop. Very stable conditions will significantly limit shower activity throughout the weekend, with a slight increase in windy showers expected Monday and Tuesday. A more typical trade wind pattern should return by the middle of next week.

Discussion

As expected, no significant forecast updates this morning.
A ridge remains just north of Kauai, bringing a hybrid sea breeze and light easterly trade wind across the state. Onshore breezes cleared skies overnight in most areas. Expect some clouds to form later this morning and into the afternoon with some sea breezes setting in. Very little precipitation is expected.
The ridge will begin to lift northward and move eastward this afternoon and evening, shifting winds northeastward for a brief period. Expect moderate to locally breezy easterly winds to return Sunday, then persist through midweek as the ridge continues to move northeast across the state. Clouds and showers will return to the more typical windward and mauka areas with the return of the trade winds, however shower activity will remain limited due to very stable conditions from low inversion heights and mass d the air dries. The trade wind reversal will begin to ease early next week, which should lead to a slight increase in trade wind showers on Monday and Tuesday, but will still remain drier than normal for this time of year. A more typical trade wind pattern is expected to return during the mid to second half of the week with increasing inversion heights.

Aviation

The light trade winds will strengthen slightly to become locally windy this afternoon and will continue to gradually strengthen on Sunday. While land breezes helped dissipate cloud cover overnight, sea breezes may have a harder time developing this afternoon with the trade winds increasing… but expect some cloud accumulation on sheltered leeward areas. Shower activity will remain limited. With the strong inversion in place, ceilings will be quite low with clouds…which will allow for periods of MVFR conditions. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail.
No AIRMET is currently in force. However, AIRMET Sierra for mountain tempo obscuration may be necessary at times, as low clouds periodically impact primarily windward slopes, with the exception of leeward slopes and the Big Island coast.

Marine

A weak elongated ridge in the northern offshore waters will move north as high pressure develops again north of the state this weekend. Winds are expected to gradually strengthen tonight, allowing moderate to locally strong trade winds to re-establish themselves over the waters. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is likely for typical windier waters around Maui County and the Big Island beginning this evening and through at least the first part of next week. Moderate to locally strong trade winds are expected to dominate the forecast for next week.
The current high surf advisory (HSA) for south-facing coasts has been extended until Monday afternoon. Although the current south-southwest swell has diminished slightly from its peak and waves may drop to just below HSA levels today, a longer, moderate south-southwest swell is expected to slowly fill in this afternoon with the arrival of long-period precursors, then peaking on Sunday. night until Monday. Long term, another moderate, long period south swell could generate strong HSA waves, but below the criteria for the High Surf Warning level late next week.
A little push from the northwest will give a slight bump to north-facing shores. Wind waves on east-facing coasts have decreased significantly and will remain weak today before rising again as wind wave chop increases due to the trade winds.
