Hathras Row: Hathras stampede: Asphyxia due to compression identified as main cause of death | Agra News

Hathras: Asphyxia due to compression was the main cause of death among the Hathras stampede victims brought to hospitals, a senior health department official said on Wednesday. Of the 121 confirmed deaths so far, 27 bodies have been sent to the Etah district hospital and 21 to the SN Medical College mortuary in Agra. The hospitals said they were facing an unprecedented situation, conducting four times the usual number of postmortems in a single day. “Of the 27 bodies brought to us, the postmortem of 22 has been concluded while the mortuary staff was preparing to conduct five more in the afternoon,” Etah Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ram Mohan Tiwari said. He added that six bodies were yet to be identified. Agra district CMO Dr Arun Kumar Srivastava said most of the victims were women aged between 40 and 50 years. “Usually, the Etah district hospital conducts four to five post-mortems a day. The rush in the last 48 hours has far exceeded this average, forcing staff and officials to extend their working hours considerably. Asphyxia due to compression has been found to be the cause of death in almost all cases.” Meanwhile, Hathras marketing manager Manjeet Singh said, “The main reason for the stampede at the Hathras satsang was suffocation. The event was held in a closed tent, causing unease among people.” » Explaining the dangers of a closed environment, Indian Medical Association Central Working Committee member Dr Sharad Gupta said, “A closed environment can trigger claustrophobia, causing symptoms like sweating, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath. In the Hathras incident, the compression caused by the stampede aggravated the situation and dehydration contributed to the deaths.” Sources said that Sikandra Rau, which had the nearest medical facility to the incident, was unprepared, lacking doctors, staff and oxygen. The injured victims reportedly arrived groaning in pain and succumbed due to lack of treatment.
