Harrison County Sheriff's Office details deadly domestic dispute that killed 1 | Police

A dispute between family members led to the death of a 24-year-old man Sunday morning at a home he shared with his grandmother and uncle on Mitchell Road, Harrison County officials said during a press conference.

The Sheriff's Office was notified of the shooting at 372 Mitchell Road around 11:31 a.m. Sunday. Derrick Jamison died instantly.

“The details of the scene, as we know them so far, are an argument started between Audrey Jamison, the grandmother, and Derrick Jamison, Audrey's grandson, regarding Derrick having to leave the residence and looking for a job,” Harrison said. said County Sheriff Brandon “BJ” Fletcher during Monday’s press conference at the Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff said that when Derrick's grandmother confronted him with the need to move and look for a job, the 24-year-old allegedly became furious.

“Derrick comes out of the residence angrily and walks toward a red Mercedes parked in the driveway,” Fletcher said.

The sheriff said that's when Frederick Jamison, an eyewitness and Derrick's uncle, tried to intervene.

“Frederick Jamison exits the residence behind Derrick and stops in front of the red Mercedes and attempts to calm Derrick down and talk to him about the altercation. As he does so, Derrick removes a handgun from the red Mercedes and points it in the direction of Frederick, who is unarmed,” Fletcher said. “Meanwhile, Audrey Jamison has approached the situation and is standing on the driver's side of the vehicle with the door open between her and Derrick. Audrey tries to calm Derrick, who is holding a gun towards Frederick.

“During the verbal engagement, Bryan Jamison, another uncle of Derrick, began approaching the situation while holding a gun,” Fletcher continued. “At this point, Derrick is believed to have seen the gun Bryan is holding and responded by firing approximately three rounds in Bryan's direction, striking him twice – once in the leg and once in the buttocks. After being injured and during his collapse, Bryan fought back approximately five times, hitting Derrick once and the red Mercedes several times.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Derrick Jamison already dead. His uncle Bryan and grandmother Audrey were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for their injuries.

“During the exchange of gunfire, Audrey was injured in the head and face, due to glass fragments coming from one of the bullets hitting the door and driver's window of the red Mercedes,” he said. Sheriff Fletcher said.

“Frederick was not injured, remained on scene and cooperated with investigators throughout the investigation,” he said. “Bryan Jamison is still receiving medical treatment for his injuries. I think he will most likely have several surgeries before we can talk to him further.

The sheriff said the Criminal Investigation Division arrived on scene around 12:19 a.m. Sunday to begin processing evidence and interviewing the individuals.

An autopsy was ordered by Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Nancy George. The Marshall Police Department Crime Scene Unit assisted at the scene along with Harrison County CSI.

“Most of the people at the scene of this incident were family members,” he said. “They were having a small family reunion when this happened. There were about 10 people there, pretty much everyone wasn't out… but everyone there is a famous, well-known family.

The sheriff noted that investigators obtained and executed two search warrants as part of their investigative process. Additionally, residential search warrants were issued by Harrison County 71st Judicial District Judge Brad Morin.

The sheriff said at this time no arrests have been made in this case.

“Both shooters in this incident – one is deceased and the other is in the hospital undergoing numerous surgeries for injuries sustained in the shooting, so no arrests have been made at this time “Fletcher said.

“The investigation is obviously ongoing. We hope this story is what we think it is,” the sheriff said. “If so, this matter will most likely become a grand jury case.” That said, there are laws in Texas that protect people from certain situations. This matter could very well be, if that is the way it is presented, a third party affair. This matter could change. It's not definitive.

“It could go in a completely different direction, so the investigation is still ongoing. We're still trying to determine what the factual information is and what the best evidence is that we can collect and prove to go with the stories that we've been given so far. “As the investigation continues and more information can be released, we will obviously release it at that time,” Fletcher said.
