Harrisburg police shoot man during 'felony traffic stop': DA

Harrisburg police shot and injured a man late Saturday afternoon during a criminal traffic stop, according to the district attorney.

The shooting was reported at 4:44 p.m. near the intersection of 19th and Derry streets.

District Attorney Fran Chardo said Harrisburg police were trying to stop the vehicle because it was related to a person who had an outstanding felony warrant. He did not say what the charge against him was, what prompted the police shooting or how many officers were involved.

The age and name of the injured person have not been released.

County detectives are investigating the shooting since Harrisburg police were involved in the shooting.

Hours after the shooting, police were still controlling the area around 19th Street and Derry was surrounded by yellow crime scene tape. Traffic was blocked with cones a few additional blocks in a radius around the area to prevent vehicles from entering.

The car stopped by police, a maroon Buick sedan, remained stopped in the travel lane of 19th Street, just before the intersection with Derry and Berryhill streets. The driver's and front passenger's doors remained open.

Evidence markers could be seen around a Buick sedan sandwiched between two police vehicles.

Evidence markers could be seen on the ground outside the car's doors, one on the front hood of the car and another taped to the rear passenger side. There were at least 18 to 20 evidence markers at the scene.

A Capital Region forensic unit was on scene and using a drone to scan the area.

It was the second police shooting in Harrisburg this month. On June 9, Kendrell Hall, 22, of Harrisburg, was fatally shot after firing a pistol at a Harrisburg police officer, a Capitol police officer and the Capitol Police K9 around 1:30 a.m. on the block 200 of South Street, officials said. said.

The shooting happened near Scott Elementary School and Rowland Middle School.
