A Harris County sheriff's deputy shot a man inside a northwest Houston gas station Thursday, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies responded to multiple calls about a disturbance outside a gas station at FM 1960 and Ella Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Deputy Chief Tommy Diaz said the 47-year-old man was “pointing guns at random people, interacting with drivers and displaying a weapon.”

Officers located a man matching the suspect's description and attempted to make contact with him upon arrival. An officer asked the man to show his hands before the man pulled out a gun and pointed it at him, Diaz said.

The deputy then pulled out his gun and shot the man.

“The officer discharged his firearm once, striking the suspect in the hip,” Diaz said. “Officers immediately called for additional resources, including EMS. Officers rendered first aid and the suspect was transported to a local hospital.”

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive. The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit was on scene investigating Thursday.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation. It will present the findings of its investigation to a grand jury at a later date, Diaz said.
