Hamas weapons expert killed in Gaza offensive, Israel says

Jerusalem:

The Israeli army said Monday it had killed a Hamas weapons expert in the Gaza Strip as the offensive continued in the town of Rafah.

In an update, the army said an airstrike killed Muhammad Salah, identified as being in charge of projects and development at Hamas's weapons manufacturing headquarters, the Xinhua news agency reported.

“Salah was part of a project to develop strategic weapons” and commanded several squads working on weapons development, according to the army.

The army also said troops were “continuing their targeted intelligence-driven operations in the Rafah area,” adding that operations were also continuing in central Gaza.

Israel carried out a large-scale offensive in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas's rampage on October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage.

The Israeli assault caused a serious humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave and killed around 37,600 people, according to Gaza health authorities.
