Halton man identified as victim of weekend shooting

Hamilton police have identified the victim of a long weekend shooting in Flamborough.

Police were called to a reported shooting on Highway 6 near 6th Concession E around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, where they say a fight broke out during a large party at a short-term rental property.

They say the fight spilled onto the highway where shots were fired at a car parked on the shoulder and another that had stopped at a nearby gas station.

“A man was found in the parked vehicle with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries,” police said in a news release.

“The deceased has now been identified as Tobenna Obiaga, 45, of Halton Region.”

He is the fifth homicide victim in Hamilton this year.

Two people in the vehicle at the gas station were shot but their lives are not in danger and have since been released from hospital.

A fourth person suffered minor injuries inside the home, but police did not say they were related to gunfire. He was also released from the hospital.

Witnesses told investigators that a dark gray sedan fled the scene of the shooting, but they do not yet have additional suspect descriptions.

“Police are still monitoring the property and several cars remain at the scene awaiting search warrants to be issued later today,” police added.

“Investigators believe that multiple witnesses to this homicide have not come forward to speak to police and those witnesses are strongly encouraged to contact the homicide unit.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mike Ebert at 905-546-4167.
