Half of the crew evacuated from a cargo ship near Isle Royale

SAULT STE MARIE (WWJ) A cargo ship in Lake Superior began taking on water, forcing half the crew to be evacuated, the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes said.

Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes was contacted around 7 a.m. saying the Michipicoten was experiencing flooding while traveling in Lake Superior, about 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale , in Michigan.

Half of the 22 people were removed from the ship “for safety reasons,” the US Coast Guard said.

The bulk carrier is now en route to a nearby port for inspections and repairs, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

“The cause of the flooding and any other damage to the vessel will be investigated once the situation has stabilized,” the statement said.

The bulk carrier Edwin H. Gott docks the Michipicoten; and U.S. Coast Guard, Border Patrol and National Park Service vessels all remain active.
