“Gunsmith 'Rust' Hannah Gutierrez-Reed sentenced to 18 months in prison”. Maximum sentence 'doesn't bode well' for Alec Baldwin, expert says.

Rust Gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the murder of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez-Reed, who was convicted of manslaughter in March, received the maximum sentence, with the judge agreeing with prosecutors that she appeared to show no remorse for her role in the deadly accident.

“The word 'remorse,' a deep regret coming from a sense of guilt for past wrongs…that's not you,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said.

Hutchins was killed on October 21, 2021, when a gun held by actor Alec Baldwin fired live ammunition. As the film's weapons handler, Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for bringing live ammunition to the set and, ultimately, loading it into the .45 caliber revolver.

👩‍⚖️ Gutierrez-Reed cried before judge handed down sentence as defense asked for conditional discharge

She addressed the court and said, “My heart aches for Hutchins, his friends and his family, according to NBC News. She called Hutchins an “inspiration.”

“I’m begging you, please don’t give me more time,” Gutierrez-Reed said.

Gutierrez-Reed's lawyers hoped the judge would take into account her “complete lack of criminal history,” Fox News reported. A parole does not constitute a conviction under New Mexico law.

“A conditional release will require Ms. Gutierrez-Reed to comply with all conditions set throughout the duration of her probationary period and to submit to all counseling and rehabilitative efforts required by this court,” Gutierrez’s attorneys said -Reed in documents.

⚖️ Prosecutors requested a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison

In a court filing obtained by NBC News, prosecutors noted that Gutierrez-Reed called the jurors who convicted her “idiots” and “assholes” in recorded phone calls from prison. She lamented that it only took two hours to deliberate. Prosecutors argued that Gutierrez-Reed's attitude during calls to her mother, her boyfriend and her legal team demonstrated a “complete and utter failure to accept responsibility for her actions.”

It was one of the first things prosecutors discussed in court Monday as they argued for a maximum sentence before the judge. The judge clearly agreed.

Prosecutors also noted in their court filing that Gutierrez-Reed “wants them to put Alec Baldwin in jail, too.” She reportedly claimed that if she was subpoenaed to appear at Baldwin's trial, she wouldn't go because he “didn't show up for her,” according to NBC.

đź“ť Court heard statements on emotional consequences

Rust Director Joel Souza, injured in the shooting, was among those who spoke.

“One moment the world made sense, and the next moment it didn't. It still doesn't, and I don't know if it ever will again,” he said during a virtual call, CBS News reported. “Those of us who were lucky enough to be able to share it [Hutchins’s] the fleeting time on this planet is better for her. »

Two of Hutchins' friends and his former agent also addressed the court. Attorney Gloria Allred read a statement from Hutchins' mother, Olga, who also appeared in a video recorded from Ukraine. “It’s the hardest thing to lose a child,” she said. “And time doesn't heal. Two and a half years have passed and the situation is getting worse and worse.”

đź”® What does this mean for Baldwin?

Experts previously told Yahoo that the outcome of that trial was important to Baldwin — and they believe that still holds true today.

“The sentence imposed on Ms. Gutierrez-Reed provides insight into how the trial judge viewed the seriousness of this somewhat unusual offense. “Even though Ms. Gutierrez-Reed did not intend to harm anyone, the fact that her actions resulted in Ms. Hutchins' death likely contributed to this significant sentence,” attorney Mark Sedlander of the law firm told Yahoo. Mancini Shenk lawyers of Los Angeles, after the decision.

“The same reasoning could apply to Mr. Baldwin if he is convicted. Judges tend to want to avoid sentencing disparities between similarly situated defendants. A heavy prison sentence for Ms. Gutierrez- Reed does not bode well for Mr. Baldwin,” Sedlander said. continued. “Although Mr. Baldwin is still presumed innocent, Ms. Gutierrez-Reed’s sentencing will likely be a priority as Mr. Baldwin prepares for trial.”

However, Sedlander noted that as an actor and producer, Baldwin is “less directly involved” than Gutierrez-Reed is as the set's armorer.

“The judge might view him as less culpable than Ms. Gutierrez-Reed if he is convicted. But after Ms. Gutierrez-Reed's conviction today, prison time is more likely for Mr. Baldwin if he is found guilty,” Sedlander concluded.

Baldwin's manslaughter trial is scheduled for July 10.
