When officers attempted to enter the apartment, a 54-year-old man opened fire on the officers, police said.

After the shots were fired, the officers and the man who had started shooting both took cover, and a short time later the man returned with two guns and started shooting again on the officers, according to police.

Police say several officers returned fire, striking and killing the man. He has not yet been identified.

The Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the police shooting.

No officers were injured during the incident.
