Groups of New York migrants brawl at Randall's Island shelter after stabbings

Blood boiled between feuding groups of migrants at the Randall's Island shelter Friday night as a fight broke out following an earlier stabbing, police and sources said.

Half a dozen migrants from Africa and South America clashed around 8 p.m. in the sprawling Manhattan tent city, which is no stranger to unruly behavior, according to sources.

The melee broke out after a 25-year-old African migrant was stabbed in the left shoulder by an attacker from the rival group, according to New York police and sources.

The man was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition, police said.

A “large, disorderly group” got into a fight following the attack, forcing additional officers to descend on the pop-up shelter, police said.

Brothers Josué and Moises Delon, aged 19 and 27 respectively, were arrested in connection with the stabbing and charged with assault, New York police said.

An 18-year-old was also arrested for his role in the fight. He was summoned for disturbing public order and released.

Sources said Friday's fighting was a result of ongoing tensions between the two groups.

Nightly melee is nothing new at the Randall's Island shelter, which was erected last August to ease the city's overwhelming migrant crisis.

In April, five men were charged with assault for their part in a violent fight in which an asylum seeker was stabbed and four security guards were injured.

The same month, a migrant violently attacked and bit a security guard who was trying to break up a fight between the man and his wife.

There was also a fatal stabbing at the site in January when a migrant attacked his fellow asylum seeker who was talking to his girlfriend.
