Grizzly K9 dog locates critically missing woman with dementia

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI — The family of an 81-year-old woman with dementia can rest easy this weekend after Mount Pleasant Police Service Dog Grizzly located her.

Mount Pleasant Sergeant Dale Swart told the Racine County Eye that the woman walked away from her home around 7 p.m. in the 9000 block of Spring Street on July 4.

The police were again called around 11:30 p.m. to say that the woman had not returned and were asking that
she will be declared missing/endangered due to her dementia.

The decision was made to call in K9 Grizzly and Officer Jared Smetana to find her. After giving the dog a piece of the woman's clothing, he was able to track her to a wooded area behind her home and lay down next to her until Smetana arrived.

The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for exposure.

“She was missing for seven hours despite the search for her,” Swart said. “This call is a
