Gregory Prunty arrested after 2 injured in Akron shooting

Police said the suspect – identified as Gregory Prunty – claimed he had a gun pointed at him and then shot two people in self-defense.

AKRON, Ohio — A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting Friday evening that left two people injured in Akron.

Police said it was around 7:35 p.m. when police responded to the scene in the 2000 block of 6th Street SW, where they found a man who reportedly had an unloaded handgun on the ground at his feet .

Police said the man – identified as Gregory Prunty – claimed he had a gun pointed at him and then shot two people in self-defense.

A 36-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman were found on the corner of nearby Sharon Street with gunshot wounds, according to Akron police. The man was punched several times, while police say the woman had a graze wound.

Both were taken to hospital for treatment, but their lives are not believed to be in danger.

“Detectives ultimately charged Prunty with two counts of felonious assault and discharging a firearm after developing additional information and sorting through evidence,” according to an Akron police news release.

Police said the shooting “stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Prunty and the victims.”

Prunty was taken to the Summit County Jail.
