Gregg Umipeg: A man hit, killed by a 13-year-old suspect identified

Police said Umipeg was struck by the 13-year-old while turning onto Franklin Boulevard in Elk Grove.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — The man allegedly struck and killed by a 13-year-old while driving a stolen car in Elk Grove has been identified as Gregg Umipeg, 55, of Sacramento.

The man's identity was confirmed Tuesday by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

Umipeg died after being struck by a suspected stolen car at Laguna and Franklin boulevards Monday evening.

Prior to the crash, the Elk Grove Police Department responded to reports of a stolen car Monday around 9:20 p.m. near Grant Line Road and Highway 99. When officers found the car, they attempted to stop the driver, but a chase began.

The car entered a neighborhood and officers eventually lost sight of it. As the driver left the area on Laguna Boulevard, he struck a Nissan driven by Umipeg at the intersection turning onto Franklin Boulevard.

Umipeg was taken to hospital where he later died.

According to police, the driver of the stolen car was 13 years old. He was taken to the hospital and was later arrested on suspicion of several charges, including felony escape and felony escape resulting in serious injury or death. He was enrolled in Juvenile Hall.
