Greece discovers 'unique' Minoan hilltop complex near Crete's new airport

Greece's Culture Ministry said Tuesday that archaeologists have discovered a “unique” monumental Minoan building on a hilltop in Crete overlooking the island's planned new international airport.

The ministry said in a statement that the building was discovered on a hill in Kasteli, almost 500 meters high, which was previously reserved for the airport's new radar.

“It is a unique and particularly interesting discovery,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, adding that it was the “first of its kind” discovered in Crete.

The circular stone building, approximately 1,800 square meters (19,300 square feet) in size, contains eight “almost labyrinthine” rings connected by small openings, the statement said.

The intended use of the complex is still unknown and may have had a ritual purpose, but its main activity took place between 3,700 and 4,000 years ago, the ministry said.

A large quantity of animal bones were found at the site.

The discovery means the planned radar will have to be moved, Mendoni said.

The new airport, designed to accommodate 10 million travelers per year, is due for delivery in 2027.
