Grass Lake man took baseball bat into his car during alleged road rage incident

CHELSEA, MI – A driver accused a Grass Lake man of taking a baseball bat into his car Tuesday in Chelsea during a suspected road rage incident, police said.

Officers responded to reports of an aggravated assault and malicious destruction of property around 11:18 a.m. June 4 in the 1100 block of South Main Street, according to the Chelsea Police Department.

A witness told officers they believed the incident started because of a road rage incident, police said. The officer spoke with the driver at the scene, who told him he had been cut off while crossing a parking lot, police said.

The driver turned around and got out to confront the suspect, a 64-year-old Grass Lake man, police said. The man is accused of pulling a baseball bat out of his own backseat, prompting the driver to back into his vehicle and close the door, police said.

The suspect allegedly swung the bat to break the vehicle's window, then returned to his own vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

The incident remains under further investigation and the Washtenaw County prosecutor will determine what charges can be authorized, police said.
