Grandmother buries her 17-year-old daughter's newborn alive, body found

In a trending video clip posted by a resource manager, Peace Ighodaro, on the X.com account, @peace_igho, the minor, while being questioned by some neighbors in the video, said she gave birth to the baby without anyone's help.

She said: “I was the one who called my mother after I gave birth. When I gave birth, I didn't know what was happening.

Ighodaro, in a message attached to the post she posted on Monday, claimed that the grandmother picked up the baby from her daughter, left her premises and then told the minor that the baby did not survive.

She also accused the grandmother of ending the baby's life as people offered to adopt the newborn.

The message read in part: “A girl called Favor in Ogombo, Ajah, gave birth last Saturday, but her mother snatched the baby from her arms and brutally murdered her. The mother had denied the teen's pregnancy, even after a test confirmed it. She went to great lengths to hide the baby bump, tying it up and keeping the teenager isolated at home.

“When a witness found out what had happened, the mother initially denied the pregnancy. But after some insistence, she admitted the truth. The teenager, still reeling from the trauma, revealed that she had given birth in the toilet and informed her mother, who coldly told her that the baby had not survived.

“The mother was taken to the police station, leaving the teenager alone and vulnerable. What's even more heartbreaking is that someone had offered to adopt the baby, but the grandmother refused, choosing instead to end her life.”

A source, who spoke anonymously to our correspondent for fear of being victimized, said a neighbor confessed to seeing the grandmother bury the baby alive, adding that when he rushed outside to retrieve the baby from the grave, the baby was dead.

“One of the neighbors said he saw the grandmother burying the baby in the courtyard of their residence, but when he rushed outside to dig the grave to save the baby, only the corpse was found.

“It is troubling why the neighbor chose to watch until the baby was buried before deciding to intervene. Even before the baby was buried, the neighbor said he saw that the baby was still crying and he also saw the grandmother digging the ground,” the source said.

Contacted for reaction, state police public relations officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the matter, noting that the grandmother had been arrested.

Hundeyin said: “The grandmother was arrested; the mother heard her baby crying after the grandmother took the baby from her. The grandmother came back later to tell him that the baby had died.

“Investigation revealed that she buried the baby alive and he died when neighbors dug the grave to save him. It was premeditated; the baby's mother was 17 years old and she is in our custody and not as a suspect

but you have to take care of it.
