Grand Island, Nebraska, scene of a rest stop where a fatal assault took place

One person was killed and another seriously injured Wednesday in a stabbing attack at a rest area on Interstate 80 near Grand Island.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that officers were called to the westbound rest stop at mile marker 316 just after 7 a.m., where they found two people who had been stabbed .

Both victims were transported to Grand Island Regional Hospital, where one of them, a 71-year-old man, was pronounced dead. The other victim, a 72-year-old woman, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said a suspect in the stabbing, James Thompson Jr., 22, of Elyria, Ohio, was apprehended by the Nebraska State Patrol after a short pursuit.

The sheriff's office said a preliminary investigation showed Thompson stabbed the two people after trying to rob them.

The victims, from Eureka, Missouri, have not yet been named as the sheriff's office was still trying to notify their next of kin.
