Grand Island fire causes $2 million in damage

The Grand Island Fire Department was notified of a heat detector and responded to the building.

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — Grand Island firefighters were called to raise the alarm after reports of a fire on Grand Island Boulevard just before 1 p.m. Saturday.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they initially saw nothing from the outside. However, upon further investigation, they discovered an active fire inside the building, with heavy smoke billowing.

One team extinguished the fire with water while another team confirmed that there was no one in the building.

Once the fire was extinguished, a crew was sent to the roof to ventilate. They discovered that the fire was still active above the ceiling and so attacked it from below and above.

The fire is estimated to have caused approximately $2 million in damage.

Several fire companies and first responders assisted Grand Island, including Sheridan Park Fire, Ellicott Creek Fire, Kenmore Fire, Brighton Fire, City of Tonawanda Fire, Erie County Sheriff's Office and Twin City.

They also thank the employees of the Grand Island Fun Center for bringing bottled water to the firefighters and the Ladies Auxilary for their additional support.
