GP convicted of sex crimes against 48 patients, including pregnant women and teenagers

A GP has been found guilty of sex crimes against 48 female patients over a 35-year period.

North Lanarkshire doctor Krishna Singh, 72, targeted patients including a rape victim, teenagers and pregnant women.

The High Court in Glasgow was told “sexual offenses were part of his professional life”.

The victims were subjected to kissing, touching, inappropriate examinations and sleazy comments by Singh, described by prosecutors as “hiding in plain sight.”

The GP, from Airdrie, had been in practice for four decades and gained an MBE for medical services.

In addition to his work as a GP, he was employed as a police surgeon, which involved examining victims of sexual violence.

His crimes were committed between 1983 and 2018, when he was reported to the authorities by a woman, leading to an investigation.

He was found guilty of 54 counts, found not proven on nine others and not guilty on two others.

The doctor committed his crimes mainly at GP surgeries in North Lanarkshire, but also at a hospital accident and emergency department, at a police station and during visits to patients' homes.

Among the victims who gave evidence in court was a 50-year-old hospital worker who was examined by Singh at Motherwell police station in March 2008 after reporting she had been raped.

She was left shocked after the GP asked her if the sex was consensual and told jurors: 'He asked me if I had worn a skirt and I said I was wearing jeans and a t -shirt.

“He asked me how low my top was and if my cleavage was showing.

“He asked me if I was being provocative… he said 'so you're not a good girl'.”

The woman's ordeal was further compounded when she was attacked by the GP.

Another former patient described how Singh would “press and push” around his pants, even though it was to control a sore throat.

She was initially a teenager when she went to see the GP and said it was a “running joke” among friends what Singh looked like.

But when asked what she thought, the 39-year-old mother said: “If it was my daughter I would be sitting in the dock for murder. No professional should act like that.”

A man admitted to jurors that he threatened to assault Singh after catching him groping his then-pregnant wife during a date in the mid-1990s.

The witness recalls: “Dr Singh came closer to us and put his hands – palms up – and then squeezed her breasts two or three times.

“He then said, 'Your breasts are getting bigger.'

“I said, 'Let her go… or I'll punch you through the window.' Then he ran away.”

In her address to the jury, prosecutor Angela Gray said: “The Crown alleges that Dr Singh had a history of offending women.

“Sometimes subtle or camouflaged, other times obvious and blatant.

“Sexual offenses were part of his professional life. He had access to women whenever the situation arose and took risks when he could.

“A quick pat-down, a look in an intimate space, an indecent comment.

“That was his way of working, hiding in plain sight.”

Judge Lord Armstrong adjourned sentencing for reports until next month.
