Governor Gianforte receives briefing on fire season outlook

Governor's Office

HELEN, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today received the 2024 Fire Season Outlook Briefing from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and the Northern Rockies Coordinating Group (NRCG).

“The state of Montana is unified and ready for this fire season,” said Governor Gianforte. “It is important to remember that we all have a responsibility to prevent human-caused wildfires. While we can't control the weather, we can control our actions to prevent human-caused fires in the first place.

Governor Gianforte discusses fire season outlook with DNRC and NRCG staff

During the briefing, fire management professionals expressed anticipation of a relatively slow build-up to the peak of the fire year, with precipitation this spring across much of the state increasing the risk of fire outbreaks later in July.

Throughout the summer and into the fall, officials expect dry and hot weather, with a normal fire season across Montana.

According to NRCG, smoke is also expected to come from fires in California, New Mexico, Montana or other states.

While nearly all fires in Montana this year are human-caused, the governor joined DNRC in emphasizing the need to prevent wildfires.

“The DNRC is ready to do its part to protect Montana this summer and fall,” said DNRC Director Amanda Kaster. “But our best partners are our friends and neighbors in Montana. Please use caution this summer and do your best to help prevent fires.

Fire prevention tips include:

  • Stay informed about weather conditions and fire restrictions in your area.
  • Always use an established ring fire and never leave campfires unattended.
  • Make sure the trailer chains are properly secured and not dragging on the sidewalk.
  • Properly maintain and clean farm and lawn equipment.
  • Avoid driving or parking your vehicle, including all-terrain and utility vehicles, on dry grass.
  • Use caution when burning debris and never burn piles when it is hot, windy, or when fire restrictions are in place.
