Governor appoints committee to investigate Rabun Co Sheriff – WGAU

Gov. Brian Kemp has appointed a committee to review allegations against Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols. Nicholas was suspended following accusations of sexual assault and indecent exposure. He was arrested last week and booked into the Rabun County Jail. The committee includes State Attorney General Chris Carr, Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley and Jackson County Sheriff Janis Magnum. The committee is required to report to Kemp within 30 days.

Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order to form an investigative committee to investigate the arrest of Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols.

Nichols was arrested and charged with sexual assault and public indecency last week. after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation began investigating the allegations against him.

Rabun County Jail records show Nichols faces charges of public indecency, sexual assault and violation of oath by a public official.

“The Rabun County Sheriff's Office has no comment on the active and ongoing investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation,” said Kevin Angell, public information officer for the county Sheriff's Office of Rabun. Channel 2 Action News.

“We’re getting there. This is new territory, so we’re doing the best we can,” said Maj. Beth Darnell with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office. Channel 2's Audrey Washington.

The GBI has not released any information about the victims.

According to the order, the committee will consist of Attorney General Chris Carr, Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley, and Jackson County Sheriff Janis Magnum.

The committee is required to report to Kemp within 30 days.
