The child's mother told police she had left her daughter sitting on the pool steps and was splashing around in the water. Police say she told officers she was walking away to get a bottle of water for her daughter when people started yelling that the child was drowning.

On Thursday night, police told WSMV4 that the girl fell into the pool shortly after 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Apartments on Arbor Knoll Boulevard. A young man at the pool pulled the girl out and began CPR.

Jabateh was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

Several people were at the pool at the time of the incident. Police said there did not appear to be a lifeguard on duty.
