Girl, 14, killed in suspected drunk driving crash identified in Orange County

A 14-year-old girl killed in a crash involving a drunk driving suspect on Newport Beach's Balboa Peninsula over the weekend was named by authorities Monday.

Rosenda Elizabeth Smiley was struck by a car Saturday evening in the area of ​​Balboa Boulevard and Palm Street, about a block from the Balboa Fun Zone in Orange County.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Smiley, a Rialto native, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fontana resident Joseph Alcazar, 30, was arrested following the crash.

He was booked into custody on suspicion of fatal traffic homicide and cruelty to a child.

Investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, but have not provided further details.
