Gila River police officer killed in shooting

A Gila River Police one police officer is dead and another is injured after a shooting broke out at a home early saturday morning.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. on June 1 in Santan, located in District 4 of the Gila River Indian Community.

Police say officers responded to reports of a disturbance and were met with a large crowd and gunfire.

Six people were shot dead, including two police officers.

The victims were transported to the hospital where Officer Joshua Briese, 23, died from his injuries.

Before joining the academy, he spent time at the Arizona Department of Corrections alongside Officer Terry Neill.

“He was just an officer that you could count on to show up when you needed him. And he just took pride in his job,” Neill said.

Officer Briese had been with the Gila River Police Department for less than a year and was still in training.

His father, David Briese, was also a police officer who was killed in the line of duty while working for the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office in 2006.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to these officers, their families and everyone affected by this tragic incident,” the department said.

A second officer is in serious but stable condition. Another person was also pronounced dead. They have not been identified.

Gila River police and the FBI are investigating the shooting.
