Police in Gifu Prefecture arrested a 37-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly stabbing his 89-year-old grandmother to death in the prefecture's Ogaki city.

Authorities received an emergency call around 8:30 a.m. the same day from a local resident reporting that the elderly woman had been stabbed in the chest.

Police found the victim, Hayako Miwa, bleeding in the kitchen of her home with two stab wounds to her chest. A bloodstained knife was discovered nearby. She was transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The attack reportedly took place around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

After the incident, the suspect, Naoya Miwa, who lived in a separate building in the same subdivision, fled the scene by car. He was apprehended in the town of Yokkaichi, in neighboring Mie Prefecture, around 9:30 a.m. that day and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police said Miwa, who is unemployed, confessed to the crime, saying: “There is no doubt that I stabbed her with a knife.”
