Gifted teenager playing on the field and in the classroom

MOUNT CARMEL, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Gifted on the playing field and in the classroom, a Mount Carmel teen is being recognized for her accomplishments and being a great role model for others.

Krystal Paredes Santiago says hard work and dedication are essential to achieving anything.


“I've been in the National Honors Society since I was in 9th grade because of the grade I got because I push myself to get good grades and stuff,” Krystal said.

She says it's not a challenge to balance school and sports.

“Not really because they're like separate things, so I usually do my homework first and then sports come second,” Krystal continued.

Krystal is proud to be a role model for her little sister.

“I'm showing that it's okay to be stressed and with all the school, sports and music lessons, but you'll get through it in the end,” Krystal added.

She also enjoys spending time with her friends, and they have great respect and admiration for Krystal.

“Cheerful, caring person, she's got a great personality, she's always there for people, she's always making sure everyone's okay,” said Mount Carmel Area High School senior Miley Butler.

Member of Future Teachers of America, gaining hands-on experience working with youth.

“We went to the elementary school for a Halloween parade and we got to spend time with little kids, like in a classroom, spending time with them, taking care of them, caring for them. handing out snacks and other things,” Krystal said.

His future career choice is no surprise.

“I want to be a teacher when I grow up and stuff,” Krystal said.
