Gibson Gulch fire near Silt nearly under control

Crews continued Thursday to battle a brush fire in the Gibson Gulch and Divide Creek area south of Silt, according to a Facebook post from Colorado River Fire Rescue (CRFR). The blaze, dubbed the Gibson Gulch Fire, grew from 2 to 4 acres on Wednesday.

CRFR and the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit are on scene. A unified command has been established due to the fire's proximity to private property. Engines, crews and aircraft have been mobilized to assist with firefighting efforts. Residents in nearby areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities.

Forward progress was halted due to an aggressive initial attack by ground and air assets.

“The incident is expected to be contained later today,” said Tommy Hayes, fire management officer with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.

Hayes provided an update on the fire and said the fire is expected to be 4 acres in size and there has been no new growth over the holidays. Hayes said the fire is expected to be out by the end of the day Thursday.

Hayes also confirmed the use of air support.

“We used single-engine air tankers and a Type 1 and 2 helicopter,” he explained. “One helicopter couldn't fly because of the weather, but the bigger one was able to help reduce the fire.”

The fire is located about 8 km from Silt. No evacuation orders have been issued.

“Things are looking really good and there's nothing to worry about,” Hayes said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow any instructions from local authorities.
