Ghost Teen Escape from Limbo (XSX) Review

A teenage ghost escapes from limbo is another simple and inexpensive single-screen platformer released by EastAsiaSoft. The goal is to reach the exit in each of the 50 stages, but there's a trick to completing each stage: you have to die.

It is a puzzle platform game. This means players must figure out how to reach the exit rather than relying on quick platforming reflexes. Sometimes timing is important, like jumping with just enough headroom to avoid landing on spikes, but this is more of an exception. Instead, players receive three hearts per stage and taking damage reduces the number of hearts but also turns the teen into a ghost. In ghost form, it is possible to move/float in any direction and move through certain tiles. However, it is impossible to collect the end of stage key and pass through the exit in ghost form. By hitting a tombstone in the form of a ghost, the teenager returns to human form.

So yes, taking intentional damage is necessary to complete most stages. This is an interesting mechanic that has no time to overstay its welcome since clearing all 50 levels shouldn't take more than an hour. Achievements are also tied to natural progression, unlocking a big Gamerscore point every few steps. Like most EastAsiaSoft games, achievement hunters will want to take note.

A teenage ghost escapes from limbo is not a difficult game and remains casual throughout. The simple 2-tone visual style is also nice, but the single continuous looping music track will require turning off after the first ten stages. My only other complaint comes from the physics of pushable boxes; they move a little too freely, making it tedious to put the boxes on the buttons. But these are minor complaints compared to a basic, straightforward puzzle platformer.

Not to be confused with: limbo

Better than: HatUp

Also play: pretty much any other EastAsiaSoft platformer
