German police officer stabbed by attacker during protest dies

A 29-year-old police officer stabbed in the German city of Mannheim during an attack on an anti-Islam protest has died, authorities said.

Friday's attack was carried out by a 25-year-old man armed with a knife, who seriously injured six people, according to police in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, where Mannheim is located.

“He stabbed the officer several times in the head,” the police statement said, adding that the officer underwent emergency surgery immediately after the attack and was placed in an induced coma but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The police shot and injured the attacker.

A live broadcast from central Mannheim on Friday showed anti-Islam activist Michael Stuerzenberger preparing to address a small crowd at a Pax Europa movement event.
